BRINGING FOOD & HOPE
For people living in impoverished places around the world, not getting sick from COVID19 is only half the battle. Many of the world’s vulnerable become victims of the COVID19 crisis because of two often-deadly secondary impacts of the disease: increased poverty and hunger.
Before COVID19, if a person could not find day labor or cash-for-work opportunities, he or she could at least go into the jungle and procure some type of vegetation to feed to family members. But, since March and the onset of the pandemic, there have been no jobs, no wages, and no opportunities to scavenge for food outside the parameters of one’s barangay (village).
The elderly have grown weaker and more at-risk, while hundreds of thousands of able-bodied breadwinners have been unable to earn even meager wages to support their households. Children are going to bed hungry and waking up with the same gnawing ache in their stomachs.
While Side by Side Alliance usually works in communities whose citizens who want to break the cycle of poverty by partnering together over the long haul to improve their economic standing, our team and many of our partners have been compelled by the current circumstances to meet the urgent need for food in these rural and isolated communities. We know we cannot feed everyone who is hungry, but we have seen first-hand that we can make a huge difference in the lives of many who are suffering.
Mother Teresa’s words continue to encourage and challenge us as a team, and we’re hoping they’ll encourage and challenge you, as well: ‘If you can’t feed a hundred people, then feed one.’
Side by Side Alliance is committed to feeding as many hungry people as we can while our regular programming is on hold… As God provides the resources, our team will deliver food to people that desperately need it. (For just a little more than the cost of a single regular size drive-thru meal in the US, we can purchase, pack, transport, and distribute nutritious food for a family of five!).
Along with the physical food, our team also brings spiritual food. People often ask, ‘Why are you doing this?’ We tell them that God calls us to love Him and to love our neighbors. We’re able to share His love with others because He first loved us. And God promises to never leave His children, even in the most difficult of times.
